2/23/10 - DR & W: Last week, D&W Reviews own Daniel Richtmyre had the opportunity to sit down with Eddy Léja-Six, Lead Game Designer for Neko Entertainment and talk about the finer details of the upcoming DSi title Faceez. (Please Note: This interview was conducted prior to the release of Faceez in North America).
D&W Reviews: So what's the basic idea with Faceez?
Eddy Léja-Six: Faceez allows you to play with your own face and yours friends’ and family’s faces: disguise them, mix them, make them move and react, put them on little cute and expressive bodies, place them in your own photos. We tried to focus on the DSi’s core functionality,
the camera, instead of releasing yet another DS game. Faceez is all about instant fun!
D&W Reviews: Will we be able to import our pre-existing photos on the DSi into Faceez?
Eddy Léja-Six: That was an important design choice. At first, we tried to use faces in pre-existing photos, and studied face recognition technologies. Then we designed and implemented our key feature: dynamic animation. It gave amazing never-seen-before results, but required photos with a specific size and angle. In the end, that choice seemed obvious. It even became a good thing: there is a lot of fun in chasing people you know to “Faceez” them! As for pre-existing photos, you can always use them as backgrounds.
D&W Reviews: What sort of crazy pictures can I expect to make?

Eddy Léja-Six: Sky’s the limit! All the options combine, so I can create a Faceez with my wife’s face, but with my beard, and a clown nose, a top hat, a laser gun, doing kung-fu moves in a public library. Of course, that’s just a silly example! We found the funniest thing was to put people you know in themed situations: they could look glorious, evil, ridiculous, happy, sad, mad, loony, angered, mischievous, and so on! Turn your boss into a monster, dress up your friends, or show yourself with your favorite star! There are even more possibilities when you put several Faceez in a picture. Even when you’ve run out of ideas, you can try taking pictures of unusual “faces”: animals, paintings, drawings, statues, etc. They all work brilliantly.
D&W Reviews: Any sort of animations too?
Eddy Léja-Six: There again, we tried to make it easy to mix animations, so you can animate independently the arms, the legs, the eyes and the mouth.
D&W Reviews: Any word on the cost?
Eddy Léja-Six: Faceez will cost 200 Nintendo Points.
D&W Reviews: How about the release date?
Eddy Léja-Six: Faceez will be available February the 22nd in the US and in March in Europe.
D&W Reviews: Any other future products we should be on the look-out for?
Eddy Léja-Six: Actually, we are in the final line with others great DSiWare titles! With some already known, as Maestro Green Groove (with Pastagames) and DodoGo! (with Alien After All) and few others to come…
